‘Red Rats’ Charity Cycle Team from 849 Naval Air Squadron Honour their Fallen Comrades
To commemorate the tenth anniversary of the loss of seven crew members during Operation Telic 14 members of the current squadron will carry out a charity cycle covering 400 miles from their base at RNAS Culdrose to finish up at the National Memorial Arboretum. Two Sea King Mk7 Airborne Surveillance & Control (SKASaC) helicopters from 849 Squadron ‘A’ (Aardvark) flight, call sign ‘Red Rats’, collided at around 0430 on the 22nd March 2003 during Operation Telic in the North Arabian Gulf with the loss of seven crew members.
The charity cycle team will arrive at the National Memorial Arboretum at 1300 on Friday 22nd March and will take part in the unveiling of the newly placed 849 Memorial plinth.
Rotary Charity Fundraisers have been co-ordinating the charity fundraising of the 14 member team so that they can maximise the recovery of Gift Aid and enable them to ultimately donate their funds to three charities Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC), National Memorial Arboretum (NMA) and Fly Navy Heritage Trust.
